Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system — and if yours is more than 20 or 30 years old, it’s probably overdue for an upgrade. Barcam Electrical replaces and modernises switchboards throughout the Mackay region, bringing older homes up to current safety standards.
When you might need a switchboard upgrade
Your switchboard still has ceramic fuses or rewireable fuses
You are experiencing intermittent power issues
You can hear buzzing or smell anything unusual near the board
Your home doesn’t have safety switches (RCDs) on every circuit
You’re adding a major appliance, air-con, pool pump, or EV charger
You’re renovating or extending the home
What We Do
Replace old switchboards with the latest models meeting all the legislative requirements, inclusive of residual current devices (RCD / safety switches) on every circuit and surge protection where required. Our team handles the design, installation and coordination with your supply authority (Ergon) if needed, including all certification paperwork.
We’ll also walk you through what’s changed and how to use the new board, so you’re not left guessing.
FAQ
-
A fuse is a single-use part that has to be replaced every time it blows. A circuit breaker is a switch that trips when there’s a problem and can be reset. Modern switchboards use circuit breakers and safety switches, which are much safer and easier to live with.
-
A safety switch monitors the flow of electricity and cuts power within milliseconds if it detects something dangerous — like someone receiving an electrical shock, or a fualt within your appliance or equipment. Queensland law requires safety switches on certain circuits in homes.

Most domestic switchboard upgrades take a day, sometimes less. All switchboard upgrades are coordinated clearly with our clients so they understand any outages required to complete the works safely, and to minimize disruption.
